Timeless appeal makes the Audi TT a winner

The Audi TT Coupe and Roadster exceeded all expectations. The Coupe was launched in October 1998, the open-top version which has been just as successful, followed in September 1999. The 250,000th TT left the production line in autumn 2004. The most popular engine version at the time was the 180bhp 1.8T.

Gentle giant

SUVs - will we ever get sick of them? Love them or loathe them, the good news is that manufacturers are making them better for everyday driving and kinder to the environment.

What drives it? A 1,490cc DOHC

16-valve VVT engine, with a three-mode AWD system linked to an automatic box.

How fast is it? In 4WD mode the 1.5-litre model produces 110bhp and the Sport delivers 145bhp. Top speed figures haven't been released for the Hong Kong cars, but the European 1.6-litre models can hit about 170km/h.

Torque in the town, but shrill in the bush

The new BMW X5's lower stance and new smooth underbody panels may help on-road handling and aerodynamic efficiency, but they further impair off-road performance, already shaky in the X5's previous incarnation.

Come with me to Fitzjohn's Avenue in the leafy and well-upholstered north London suburb of Hampstead just before 9am, or a little after 3pm, on a weekday and witness a scene of mayhem.

Here, there is a concentration of expensive private primary schools, and the vehicle of choice in which to ferry precious Olivia or Oliver is invariably an immense, powerful, gas-guzzling SUV.

Alfa Romeo of Auto Sportiva will open new facilities by the end of this month, and the first examples of Alfa's new range will be arriving shortly, says Italian Motors spokeswoman Sancy Chan. Alfa Romeo has some fine cars, with the swish GT and the new 156 earning a five-star Euro crash-test rating.

Buy a Lotus Elise R (HK$649,000) or any of three Exige S demonstrator cars (from HK$765,000) this month, or while stocks last, and Richburg Motors will fly you to the British marque's Hethel factory, says the dealer's spokesman, Fai Tsang.

Quick sales drive home Audi's superiority

The latest range of Audis is selling so well that the dealer, Premium Motors, is having trouble keeping up with demand.

During its launch at a three-day motor show at Ocean Terminal, more than 70 Audi A6s were sold - a record for the model.

There's B4 ... and after

THE SUCCESS of the Impreza in the World Rally Championship during the 1990s turned Subaru into a global cult icon. Until then a niche manufacturer of boxy, all-wheel-drives, the Japanese marque was beloved by farmers, country doctors and real estate agents, but lacked emotional appeal.

VW Touareg V8

Volkswagen built its first 4WD, based on the Beetle, during World War II, even though no one could buy one. Part of the war effort, you understand. Despite a few other 4WD attempts, the Touareg is Volkswagen's first dedicated off-road wagon.

S4 stunner

THE AUDI S4 saloon looks stunning in the sunshine. There it gleams, with massive 18-inch alloy wheels and a 345-horse- power, 4.2-litre V8 engine under that compact body.

And I'm itching to get my hands on its six-speed transmission and test that Quattro all-wheel drive.

Rugged as it comes

THERE ARE FEW manufacturers who know how to build a tough four-wheel drive that is also capable of smoothing the path on city roads. And Toyota is one of them. The Prado basks in the glow of the LandCruiser legend derived from cast-iron off-road credentials earned since the 1950s.
