Dettori tests positive at Longchamp, faces drugs inquiry

Frankie Dettori, one of the outstanding jockeys of his generation, failed a drugs test when riding at Longchamp in France in September, his lawyer announced on Tuesday.

The legendary Italian rider’s positive result will be the subject of a hearing conducted by France Galop, French racing’s governing body, in Paris next week.

Racing's two most charismatic jockeys, Christophe Soumillon and Frankie Dettori, have had relatively low-key seasons but, at Longchamp today, they both have chances to turn their seasons round.

Soumillon, 31, and the Dettori, 10 years older, clash on the co-favourites in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, which they have won five times between them.

Regency aces bring Cruz double joy

On a night when the skill of jockeys was celebrated, it was former champion hoop Tony Cruz who stole some of the limelight as a trainer with a 'Regency double' at Happy Valley.

And the six-time Hong Kong jockeys' premiership-winning Cruz was taking at least some of the credit for the winning rides aboard Regency Luck and Regency Winner, as they saluted in contrasting styles.
