Stephanie Au Hoi-shun is aiming to break new ground - and the one-minute barrier - in her pet event when she takes to the water at the London Olympics.

Tang gets London Games green light

Marathon swimmer Natasha Tang Wing-yung has qualified for the Olympic Games.

And she could be joined by four teammates in London if they have their way.

Tang became the first Hong Kong swimmer to qualify for the Games after she finished 12th in an open-water selection race in Portugal at the weekend.

Athlete born to a swimming family

Fu Wing was born to a swimming family. His father, Fu Tai-chun, is a former national swimmer for China.

Fu learned how to swim at the age of three and started training at the age of six. Having trained for 15 years, he is now the fastest swimmer in Hong Kong and holds two national short course records: 50- metre and 100 m freestyle.

Records tumble as students shine

Five records were set at Clementi Secondary School's annual swimming gala in the Victoria Park pool.

Form Five student Tse Ka- yan smashed three records in the girls' 50-metre freestyle, and 50 m and 100 m breaststroke races. Ka-yan, who also set three new marks in 1997, said she would like to do even better next year.

The courses are probably open to the public during the summer. Beginners, immediate and improvers classes are available.

Modest champ breaks three records

TINA Chan Chi-yan was the star at the Jockey Club Government Secondary Technical School 30th swimming championships when she broke all three records at the meet and clinched the Grade A girls' championship.

The Fifth Former edged out her rivals to set records in the 100 m, 50 m breaststroke and 50 m freestyle. She also won a silver in the 21 m freestyle.

Youngsters outshine Olympians

RISING star Robin Lamsam, already a seasoned international, was overshadowed by a budding young rival at the short-course age group gala at the Hongkong Sports Institute in Sha Tin yesterday.

Lamsam, the territory's only woman swimmer at the Barcelona Olympics, was beaten by Lung En-ting in two races for girls aged 15 to 17.
