When PR hound and fashion victim Edina Monsoon, the character from British comedy and fashion-world parody Absolutely Fabulous, famously said - "It's Lacroix, sweetie, Lacroix!" - nobody knew it would ring so true 20 years on.

Original spin

In a grand town house near the Arc de Triomphe last week, Raf Simons presented what's being hailed as the new 'New Look' for Dior. The autumn-winter 2012/13 collection at the Paris haute couture fashion week marks a fresh chapter in the story of the French fashion house in much the same way that Christian Dior did with his first show in 1947.

The diverting Sonia Rykiel

The French designer Sonia Rykiel is not one of those fashion icons who goes in for the sloppy, unconstructed look. Nor is she the sort of woman who is likely to admire the shiny-faced, potato-picking images of models so dear to current American designers. As far as she is concerned, fashion is about seduction and art, and being seen to make an aesthetic effort.

nice work if you can get it

HAUTE couture season is usually also all about party season. John Galliano was spotted at chic Chinese restaurant Dave (pronounced Dah-Vay) immediately after the Givenchy show, entertaining American actress Teri Garr as well as groupies from Vogue and the people from Saks Fifth Avenue.

From the court of King Karl

LAST December, fashion history of the direst kind was made when Jean Louis Scherrer, a veteran of 38 years, was kicked out of the house that bears his name by financial backer, Seibu of Japan.
