A feast of fests

Summer is practically upon us, which can mean but one thing: festival season is here. Not long ago, the options for a live music blowout in Asia were rather limited - save Japan and Australia - but over the past five years, an eclectic range of top-notch events have popped up across the region.

27 May 2012 - 12:00am

Just the ticket

The Fuji Rock Festival in Niigata, central Japan, this month promises its best lineup in a dozen years. Inspired by England's Glastonbury festival, the three-day event continues to expand with a mix of big and hip names and acts from all corners of the music world.

9 Jul 2009 - 12:00am

A smashing Sonic Summer fest

Japan's mighty Fuji Rock festival in late July casts a shadow over almost every music event in the region and it's easy to forget that just weeks later another massive rock festival takes place in two of the nation's main metropolitan areas.

21 May 2009 - 12:00am

Winner takes all

Guangzhou's rock talent looks like it's ready to rival Hong Kong's scene if a battle of the bands competition there is anything to go by. Five bands will compete in the finals at Hooley's Irish Bar and Restaurant with the winners getting a weekly gig at the venue.

19 Jun 2008 - 12:00am

Taipei festival turns up the volume

Taiwan's Formoz Festival has tripled its budget from last year, added a soccer stadium for its main stage and named top US and Japanese acts such as Yo La Tengo, Mercury Rev, Buffalo Daughter, Teriyaki Boyz and Anna Tsuchiya to a lineup that includes more than 100 bands and DJs and about 30 international acts.

26 Jul 2007 - 12:00am

Peak season

It speaks volumes about the magic of the Fuji Rock Festival that musician-turned-promoter Johnnie Fingers says he still gets misty-eyed when the event is mentioned.

In the cluttered calendar of outdoor musical festivals, two events remain head and shoulders above the rest: Britain's Glastonbury and Fuji Rock.

12 Jul 2007 - 12:00am

Beijing blitz

Local music fans whose ears are still ringing from last month's Fuji Rock probably won't be interested, but if you weren't able to make it to Japan, it's not too late for a bit of summer festival action.

24 Aug 2006 - 12:00am

That Formoz feeling

FIVE YEARS AGO, Taiwanese concert organiser Freddy Lin felt it was time to bring some real bands to Taiwan.

13 Jul 2006 - 12:00am

Get your rockers off

Asia's summer rock festival season is fast approaching and, with Hong Kong a glaring omission from the list of dates, it's time to get those tickets sorted.
