COVET: Extended luxury

Rolls-Royce has given the chauffeur-driven buyer more to love (6.7 inches, to be exact) with the debut of the Ghost Extended Wheelbase. The extra space is added to the rear seat, where knee room doubles compared with the standard Ghost. A new panoramic moonroof and an optional rear-seat cooler with Champagne flutes enhance the already sumptuous interior.

Celebrate in classic style

Those who watched last month's British royal wedding will have seen Prince William and Catherine Middleton drive around in style. The bride arrived at Westminster Abbey in the quintessential British car, a 1977 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI. With the knot tied, the couple left in a 109-year-old open-topped horse-drawn carriage on their way to Buckingham Palace.

Beauty in the beast

Being invited to drive a Bentley Mulsanne is like being summoned to Buckingham Palace: it doesn't happen every day unless you're a chauffeur. The 2011 model was launched in Hong Kong last April and the first orders are just being delivered.

Sleek Jaguar is no old man's car

Remember the classic scene in old Western movies - usually the precursor to a hair-raising chase - when the hero leaps aboard his steed, which obligingly rears up on its hind legs before galloping off madly in all directions?

Horses are in short supply in Hong Kong - and there's also a distinct shortage of heroes in the city.

Santa Fe is in a class of its own

A glance at the specification sheet for the revamped Hyundai Santa Fe shows it is well-equipped, with seven seats, four-wheel drive, 18-inch alloys, five-star NCAP safety rating, six-speed automatic transmission, eight air bags, dual-zone climate control, a sunroof and a five-year warranty. That's a lot of SUV for HK$268,000, but is it as good as it looks on paper?

The Editor's Note

Ovid, the magister amoris of Rome, was banished to the bleak Bulgarian port of Tomis by Caesar Augustus in 8 AD. Just before the poet's departure he sent Augustus a message which read: 'Fortune and Love favour the brave.'

Turbo Charged

No one can accuse BMW of sitting on its laurels. Barely a year into the life of its much-hyped X6, the German automotive giant has announced an upgrade model of the crossover SUV, one featuring a 4.4-litre Twin Turbo-charged V8 engine. The powered-up X6xDrive50i deploys an amazing 407 horsepower and 600 Nm torque, accelerating from 0-100km/h in a breezy 5.4 seconds.

A dash of confidence

When you've spent a significant part of your motoring life under surveillance, you appreciate the finer points of traffic policing. 'Ah Sir' of the Tung Chung manor is a real pro on the Lantau Expressway. For a couple of clicks he's kept a discreet but visible watch on the glide of this red Bentley Continental GT Speed along the windswept stretch to Disneyland.

B on the bonnet

There's an art to handling the biggest, plushest Bentley in Hong Kong, and I'm receiving driving advice some socialites might seek. 'Remember that the Arnage RL is a big car and, at 5.64 metres, about as long as a minibus,' says the kindly Bentley guy, who doesn't want to be named.
