French actor and newly minted Russian citizen Gerard Depardieu yesterday compared President Vladimir Putin with the late Pope John Paul II and said the ex-KGB agent was what Russia needed as a leader.

Hollywood actor Gerard Depardieu, who has threatened to quit France to avoid higher taxes, received a Russian passport yesterday and an offer of residence in a central Russia region known for Stalin-era Gulag labour camps.

Gerard Depardieu, the French actor who says he is quitting his homeland to avoid higher taxes for the rich, has received a Russian passport and met with President Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin said on Sunday.

Depardieu met Putin, who earlier granted him citizenship, at the Russian leader’s residence in the Black Sea resort of Sochi on Saturday, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Russians reacted yesterday with amusement, disbelief and a heavy dose of irony to the news that the Kremlin has granted citizenship to French actor Gerard Depardieu to solve his tax woes.

In a letter broadcast on Russian television, the actor declared his love for President Vladimir Putin and called Russia a "great democracy".

French politicians reacted with dismay after it emerged the country's leading actor, Gerard Depardieu, has taken up the role of tax exile in neighbouring Belgium.

It was confirmed on Monday that he has taken up residence in Nechin, a tiny village just over the border in Belgium which is a favoured spot for wealthy French nationals.
