Cafe de Coral savours lower rent increases

Cafe de Coral Holdings, the world's largest Chinese fast-food chain operator, has seen rent increases on its outlets slow to 5 per cent this year after a period when landlords asked for massive rent increases for retail space.

Super lunch deal a hit with hungry hordes

More than 20,000 people have queued for $12 lunches at Hong Kong's biggest Chinese fast-food chain in the past two days.

Cafe de Coral's three-day promotion started on Wednesday, with each of its 110 branches selling between 100 and 120 Big Bowl Rice lunch sets a day for $12 - a discount of more than 50 per cent.

CAFE de Coral operates fast-food and speciality restaurant chains under the names of Cafe de Coral, Spaghetti House and Ah Yee LengTong.

This time last year, Seapower Securities had a buy recommendation on the counter.

This proved sterling advice, as Cafe de Coral outperformed the market by 65.94 per cent.

New entry in food chain

Competition among fast food shops is intensifying with a co-founder of Cafe de Coral and Fairwood launching the first in a proposed new food chain.

Alfred Lo Hoi-fook, who helped found Cafe de Coral in 1963 and Fairwood in 1972, yesterday opened Fruito Ricci in Whampoa Garden, Hunghom.

Mr Lo has poached two long-serving Fairwood executives to join his venture.

Mass pub sale as Bass shifts focus

Bass, the British brewery group, has launched a massive restructuring programme aimed at refocusing on better performing operations and buying into other sectors.

After the GBP279 million (about HK$3.53 billion) disposal of its Gala bingo chain, Bass yesterday said it had also sold 1,428 pubs, and was handing back GBP850 million to shareholders.
