Garbage

Slovenly habits have no place in Hong Kong, especially our own

Compactors to crush housing estate rubbish

Public housing estates will adopt new refuse handling systems next year that will compress the volume of rubbish by up to two-thirds.

The two systems will be installed first in estates completed after next September but may be extended to existing estates later.

English lessons from garbage trucks

People in the Taiwanese city of Tainan are speaking a load of garbage these days as part of an innovative plan to improve English.

Last month, garbage trucks started broadcasting conversational English to announce their arrival instead of the usual pieces of music from Beethoven or Mozart. The idea was conceived by the mayor's wife.

Police received a distress call at about 2 pm from friends of the 29-year-old artist from Trinidad and Tobago, claiming his US$1 million (HK$7.7 million) collection of paintings had been stolen.

Dangerous gas

WE may think that the best way to keep our city clean is to throw rubbish into bins, but that only keeps it out of our sight. Our rubbish is actually burned in a garbage-burning system which produces marsh gas which is hazardous to our health.
