ENGLISH rider Gary Carter chalked up his sixth success of the season when giving a neat display on Leprechaun (9-2) to win the fourth event on yesterday's card.

Worrying times ahead for Carter

A DISILLUSIONED Gary Carter saw his Derby dreams evaporate yesterday and may be counting his continued Hong Kong stay in weeks rather than months.

The English jockey was expecting to ride Classic hope Wind Dancer in Sunday's $2.75 million Stewards' Cup but will now be on stablemate Our Pal - if it gets a run.

Good going is the key for Allegresse

DEREK Cruz and Gary Carter are beginning to hit their straps. Souper won well for the new stable pairing at the weekend to make it five winners for the season and generally their horses are all running really well.

Cruz and Carter in a Souper trial run

DEREK Cruz's team have been knocking on the door all season and generally running well as Wind Dancer underlined when showing his strong Derby credentials in taking a quality last race on Sunday.

Yesterday Cruz and his new stable rider Gary Carter combined for a couple of useful barrier trial wins.

Mid-tempo Concert rehearsal

CONCERT King continued his preparation for the International Bowl with an adequate trial on his less-than-favoured equitrack surface at Sha Tin yesterday.

The brilliant galloper had looked almost peerless in winning a grass trial at the beginning of the month, a hitout that also included River Verdon, Quicken Away and troubled Deerfield.

Carter a wise booking for Allan stayer

STEPPED up to a distance that looks ideal, stayer Ka Fook will take plenty of beating in an interesting sixth event at Happy Valley tonight.

Ka Fook was a very promising griffin when with Bruce Hutchison and, to some extent, has fulfilled expectations. His most notable success was undoubtedly a win over Northern Fireball early last season when still with Hutchison.

Carter holds Trump card

ENGLISH jockey Gary Carter quickly made his presence felt in Hong Kong racing when he won the first major trophy event of the new season last Sunday - and could turn in a repeat performance in today's main event.

Carter stays inside the law - to Cops' chagrin

IT could only happen in Hong Kong. Caught for speeding, Derek Cruz's new jockey Gary Carter found himself sitting in Sha Tin police station for 11/2 hours last week as he only had his English documents rather than an international licence.

Centre stage for new-boy Carter in feature event

NEW boy Gary Carter had a perfect introduction to Hong Kong racing when he captured the Kwangtung Handicap Cup, the traditional opening day feature race, at Sha Tin yesterday.

Carter gave a faultless performance on topweight Our Pal (2-1 favourite) and was very quickly repaying the faith of trainer Derek Cruz in signing him as his stable rider for the season.

New boys quick to make mark

NEW kids on the block Gary Carter, Jeff Lloyd and Dean McKeown dominated yesterday's important barrier trial session at Sha Tin - the first of the season held on the grass.

Carter and Lloyd both scored trial doubles while McKeown was also on the mark and would have won another had he required the imposing Dashing to stride out to the line in the fourth heat.

Carter scores timely win in feature race

HONGKONG-bound Gary Carter scored a highly appropriate success on Smarginato in yesterday's $1 million Royal Hongkong Jockey Club Trophy at sun-kissed Sandown Park.

Carter, who leaves England to team up with Derek Cruz on August 15, pushed his highly-rated colt with a powerful challenge to score at 12-1 by 11/2 lengths from favourite River North.
