POPULAR Darren Gauci will be watching the Melbourne Cup curled up on his couch at home - but he's still counting himself lucky. Darren, who had several excellent seasons in Hong Kong, was due to ride English import Quick Ransom in the Cup but has been ruled out of action for at least a fortnight after a spill from Cox Plate winner Octagonal on Saturday.

Concert Boss in tune for Begg's treble

THE Neville Begg-Darren Gauci axis flexed its muscles at Sha Tin yesterday with veteran handler Begg grabbing a 920-1 treble.

Begg scored with 23-1 chance Local Colour in the fourth, Concert Boss, who made 4-1 look generous with a facile success in the sixth, before Diablo finally lost his maiden tag under one of the rides of the season from Gauci in the eighth.

Gauci on the mat but wins the day

AUSTRALIAN rider Darren Gauci left Sha Tin last night a relieved man after a lengthy Stewards' Inquiry into an incident in the final event.

Gauci, who is stable jockey to Neville Begg, was riding favourite Enthusiasm for his old boss, Lawrie Fownes, in the 1,600-metre nightcap and appeared to move in quickly for a rails run.
