The unprecedented killing of two cameramen from Gaza's Hamas television station in a targeted missile strike this week raised questions about whom Israel considers to be militant operatives, and thus legitimate targets.

A senior Islamic Jihad militant was killed on Monday in an Israeli strike on a Gaza City building housing Palestinian and international media, the Islamist faction told news agency, AFP.

Israel confirmed the attack, with its intelligence services saying the strike had targeted “senior Islamic Jihad officials” who were on the premises.

Israel vowed to punish Hamas militants after scores of rockets fired from Gaza seriously wounded two people, provoking air strikes that killed four Palestinian militants.

On the Palestinian side, one source speaking on condition of anonymity, said that a truce negotiated with the help of Egypt had come into force from midnight local time.

Tensions soared around Gaza on Wednesday after Israeli air raids killed four militants and Palestinian armed groups fired 68 rockets at southern Israel, seriously wounding two people.

It was the biggest surge in cross-border violence since June, and prompted both Israel and Gaza militant groups to vow they would not allow the attacks to go unanswered.
