Mouth-ulcer gels recalled after tests find bacterial contamination

The public has been warned not to use two batches of mouth-ulcer gels because of bacterial contamination.

Thirteen products contain the tainted gels - Jalogel-1 Gel with batch number LX0699 and Jelaplexin Gel with batch number JW1969. A leading pharmacist warned that use of the any of the tainted products could lead to organ failure or even death.

A Shenzhen victim of toxic gel injections from an operation six years ago had her long-awaited court rehearing yesterday in her 300,000 yuan (HK$342,625) compensation claim against a popular surgical hospital.

What's in it?

Other names it goes by? Hyaluronan or hyaluronate

What's it used in? Facial moisturisers, anti-ageing products, eye creams and foundations. In 2003, the US Food and Drug Administration approved hyaluronan injections for filling soft tissue defects under the trade name Restylane.

First court claim on breast gel since ban

A Shenzhen court will today begin hearing a claim for compensation for the effects of a toxic breast-boosting gel - the first since the product was banned last month.

The case - an appeal filed by Shenzhen consumer Zhang Huiqin against an earlier court ruling - could be the first of many against the producers of the hydrophilic polyacrylamide gel, known as PAAG.

Treatment initially used for scars and wrinkles

PAAG, or hydrophilic polyacrylamide, was first developed in Ukraine more than a decade ago but has never been widely used for breast enlargement, according to a plastic surgeon.

It was used to fix scars and wrinkles, said Hong Kong Medical Association vice-president Louis Shih Tai-cho, who is also a private dermatologist.

A good hair styling product can add volume, shine and style to your hair. Go for an alcohol-free gel, wax or spray that won't strip your hair of its natural oils.

Aveda Sap Moss Styling Moss (250ml/$200)

This alcohol-free spray-gel stops frizz and keeps your hairdo in place for a long time. Not good for dry and damaged hair, though.
