Is it time to update simplistic notions of 'male' and 'female' gender?

Does playing with toy cars and robots mean you're a boy? Does wearing a dress and make-up make you a girl? Traditional concepts of gender are increasingly being challenged around the world by people who feel a full expression of their identity cannot be summed up by the term "man" or "woman".

No wedding for W

A transgender woman lost her legal challenge to get married in Hong Kong. The woman, only known as W, wanted to marry her boyfriend, but was not allowed to because on her birth certificate she is male. Her boyfriend does not know that his fiancee used to be a man.

Sex-change law has not kept up with the times

It is legal in Hong Kong to undergo a sex change and the gender identity team at the Queen Mary Hospital has helped dozens of people do so surgically since 1986.
