Franciscan monks planted the first vines in Sonoma in the 1830s. After the gold rush of 1849 and the great American land-grab that added California to the United States, a Hungarian on the run from the Austrian empire arrived in Sonoma.

His name was Agoston Haraszthy and this enterprising fellow planted more than 100 varieties of grapes on what would become Buena Vista winery.

A sorry episode

It takes a brave woman to admit that she can't get through the week without a fix of Santa Barbara (Star World, 2pm, 11pm) but that is what one reader did this week when she called to inquire what had happened to her lifeline at the end of last week. She had set the video and came home to find lots of British sitcoms had been taped instead. The next day she got a re-run of Oprah.
