Raised in Milan, a three-hour rattle along Trenitalia's westward rail line, I've been visiting Venice for decades. I've cruised through the city, taking in the ancient palazzi from the seat of a gondola. I've even donned one of those hideous facemasks and immersed myself into the incognito revelry of Venice's world-famous February Carnevale (carnival).

Outclassed Tai Po target domestic glory after AFC Cup defeat

Debutants WoFoo Tai Po's hopes in the AFC Cup are virtually over after another defeat at home to SHB Da Nang, of Vietnam, in their group H match last night.

The 2-1 defeat at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground leaves Tai Po at the bottom of the four-team group with only one point from four matches.

Our rivers need greater protection

Conservationists describe the illegal damming of a natural stream in Tai Po, apparently to provide road access to a development project that has not even been approved, as the worst case of eco-vandalism since the Tung Chung stream incident more than four years ago. Those are strong words, even in a city well accustomed to conflict between development and preservation of the environment.

Another Lantau stream is sacrificed

Democrats say the diversion of the waterway proves new laws are needed

A 300-metre section of Lantau's Ngong Ping stream has been diverted into a man-made channel in the latest case of environmental destruction on the island.

The channel diverts the stream as part of the Mass Transit Railway Corporation's cable car development leading to the Big Buddha.

Isn't that where the rich and famous holiday? Indeed. This 40km stretch of ruggedly beautiful coastline, lapped by emerald green waves (hence its name), was the brainchild of the Aga Khan during the 1960s, and was built to strict architectural guidelines.

Butterflies lend colour and beauty to Mai Po

Mai Po is well known as a haven for birds but is less well known for its butterflies. Over 53 species of butterflies have been recorded at Mai Po, providing a colourful spectacle during summer.

Birds are not the only visitors to Mai Po. Each year many butterflies pass through during spring and autumn. They play an important role in the pollination of plants.

Figs and coffee start day of bliss in idyllic Tuscany

OUTSIDE the bedroom door on the flagstone terrace, there was a fig tree with fruit bursting to ripe perfection.

Every morning, under the blue Tuscan skies of late summer, we would breathe the crisp air, brew coffee and cut up figs for breakfast.

Then we would lay out maps, open guide books and plot the course of another perfect day.
