Wind farm proposal a risk to geopark, says group

Geopark added to the global list

Hong Kong's eastern countryside has been added to the Unesco-sponsored global geopark list.

The designation was made by the Bureau of the Global Geopark Network after a three-day conference in Norway. A total of 10 sites were chosen out of 16 applications from around the world this year.

Landlord told to stop work at Sai Wan beach

The government has ordered a landlord to stop all work on a beach site inside the protected Hong Kong Geopark.

Officials said they had found signs of unauthorised excavation at the private site on Tai Long Sai Wan beach.

An accreditation system for geopark guides has been set up to raise standards after some tour guides gave wrong information.

Young Ng Chun-yeong, chairman of the Association for Geoconservation, said tour guides working for some local travel agencies were often laymen and their performance in the field was unsatisfactory.

Hongkongers should learn to conserve and appreciate the city's newly opened national geopark instead of expecting it to be another amusement park, geologists say.

Restrictions on access to some geosites proposed

Access may be restricted to some sites in the planned new geopark stretching across the eastern New Territories.

For reasons of safety and protection of sensitive areas, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department says it may require visitors to get permission before visiting some of the geological features that will be showcased in the park.
