Life & limb

HONG KONG BALLET'S senior soloist Carlo Pacis once refused point blank to put on a costume that he thought was too skimpy. 'It was a little Speedo, flesh coloured, and I refused to go on,' he says. The Filipino dancer was six years old at the time. The strength of character that led a small child to insist on the right costume for his first public solo is still apparent today.

Beyond borders

FOR ITS LAST Hong Kong show in 2002, the mainland's National Ballet presented Zhang Yimou's Chinese-themed ballet Raise the Red Lantern. This was the work that won them international acclaim when it was performed in London and Paris last season.

Smoke-free performance

The world class production by Les Ballets De Monte-Carlo at City Hall on May 21, was a joy to behold. Even more so because the tour organiser, Arts Promotion Asia, Ltd, managed to bring this wonderful event to Hong Kong without tobacco sponsorship.
