Always got on with expatriates

There are a number of unfair and misleading remarks on me in Danny Gittings' 'From the Gallery' column of June 17. They give readers an incorrect impression of my attitude towards expatriates in Hong Kong.

Badge of rubber-stamp honour

Doors were locked and security guards with walkie-talkies patrolled the corridors. Outside, police kept protesters at bay while six vans of reinforcements waited nearby. But all this failed to stop the provisional legislature's critics from sneaking into the public gallery to disrupt the orgy of self-justification that dominated yesterday's final session.

In a column in the Sunday Morning Post, on December 7, Danny Gittings says that I am an example of those 'who seem unable to come to terms with the fact that . . .[Hong Kong] is no longer a British colony'. This is demonstrated, he alleges, by my criticising Hong Kong shopkeeper rudeness, littering, high prices, taxi drivers, etc, in The Times.

Genuine editorial freedom

I refer to Danny Gittings' August 23 commentary piece in the South China Morning Post, which included a reference to Window magazine.

It is unfortunate that Mr Gittings seems to labour under some confusion over the differences between an editorial and a signed commentary.

Incredible intuition

SUNDAY Morning Post political editor Danny Gittings in his musings (July 4) plugs legislator Christine Loh who, after years clamouring for universal franchise, accepted appointment to the Legislative Council without strenuous demur.
