Q Is glass art a legitimate art form worth collecting?


Julie Lambe, of Gaffer Studio Glass, a new gallery due to open in mid-February, says: 'The Hot Glass movement was started in America in the 1950s. Before that, it was produced in large numbers in a factory environment. Many glass artists came to it from ceramics around the 70s or 80s.

Bottoms up

Even the humble glass can make a design statement these days. Take the SiloLine collection designed by Roman Gauthnot for French company Silo Design. A frosted outer glass - with a clear 'window' - encloses a rounded inner chamber made out of transparent Pyrex.

Saturn And Oceania Glass Exhibitions

Glass artists Ola Hoglund and Marie Simberg-Hoglund present their Saturn Collection. Using the Sommerso technique, heavy crystal is layered, separated by pockets of air with colour around the core. The Oceania exhibition (pictured) starts on Thu, featuring art glass by 92-year-old Italian glass master Alfredo Barbini. Mon-Sat, 11am-6pm. M'sMa Gallery, G/F, 41-43 Graham St, Central.

Crystal clear celebration

Swarovski is celebrating Christmas in the most outlandish way possible.

Today it will unveil what could be the world's most spectacular Christmas tree. Valued at $5 million, the 20-metre high tree, on display at Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong, will be decorated with over 100,000 pieces of Swarovski crystal.

Q A friend showed me a lovely piece of Finnish glass she picked up a few years ago in Europe. Far from being strict, modern and minimalist in the style that we have come to expect from Scandinavian design - it had a very organic shape and was made in glowing, earthy colours. Is this a trademark of Finnish glass design? Where and how should I start collecting pieces in Hong Kong?

Cathay oils up Vietnam tourists

We see Cathay Pacific has a new package on offer. It's called the 'Come Again' Vietnam holiday.

Reader Silvan Colani just received it, raised an eyebrow, and passed it on to us.

It actually sounds like a pretty good deal. Would-be visitors are offered a veritable buffet of hotels and departure dates.

Only Dreams, Only Truth

The Liuligongfang glass art gallery presents an exhibition of contemporary Chinese glass art by Taiwanese-born artist Yang Hui Shan. Each piece tells a story, teaches a traditional Chinese virtue or carries a blessing to the owner. Pictured is a piece titled Omnipresence. 10am-9pm daily. Park Court, Pacific Place, Admiralty.
