Two days after being notified by the Vietnamese authorities that 11 survivors had been found and 25 fishermen were missing from the Fung Ching Fuk, Hong Kong officials despatched two Government Flying Service (GFS) aircraft to the area.

The crew of the first search and rescue plane spent just over an hour combing part of the zone in the late afternoon.

No question of discrimination

I refer to the article by Glenn Schloss headlined 'Expat cops on the outside' (South China Morning Post, July 3), which requires clarification.

There is no truth in rumours that there is a 'cap' on the number of expatriate police officers to be promoted. Also, the allegation of nepotism is not supported by facts and totally unfounded.

It is regrettable that the contents of the Force Monthly Morale Assessment Report for August have been selectively quoted and taken out of context in the article.

Cable TV penalised

The broadcasting watchdog reprimanded Cable TV yesterday for showing adverts which claimed all Manchester United matches would be shown live.

Viewers were misled, said the Broadcasting Authority.

The announcer had promised 120 matches would be broadcast live and a caption said all Manchester United matches would be covered.

PLA GARRISON WAR DRILLS REVEALED

PLA helicopters from the Hong Kong Garrison conducted patrols of urban areas and practised surveillance of targets on the ground, it was revealed yesterday.

Armoured personnel carriers practised live-ammunition target shooting, according to the Liberation Army Daily newspaper. The report was the first detailed account of Garrison exercises.

Survivors 'ready to lynch pilot'

THE dazed Italian pilot of the crashed plane was taken into a room at the airport where uninjured passengers were in a mood to 'lynch' him, sources said.

'A Taiwanese woman screamed 'murderer' and men started behaving in a threatening way,' said an aviation source.
