A Japanese city devastated by the 2011 tsunami has received anonymous gifts of gold worth more than US$250,000 in a phenomenon dubbed a "goodwill gold rush", as the second anniversary of the disaster approaches.

Haier slides on income warning

The share price of Haier Electronics Group fell 10.24 per cent yesterday, after the company warned of poor performance by its mobile-phone business in the first half.

In a statement on Thursday, the group said first-half results would be adversely affected by the operating losses and impairment losses in goodwill in its mobile-phone business.

THE PRESENT interim reporting season is throwing up some interesting results, following changes to accounting rules to bring Hong Kong into line with international practice.

Investments weigh heavy in e-New loss

Digital transaction solutions provider e-New Media has reported a net loss of HK$204.56 million for last year, mainly due to provisions for a fall in the value of securities and property investments.

Year-on-year comparison was not possible because the firm, formerly a country-club operator, completed a reverse takeover of New Media Corp in November 1999.

Stockholm listed e-business and Internet consultancy Icon Medialab International saw its first operating profit of US$304,000 for the three months to June 30. It had US$1.5 million operating loss for the same quarter a year earlier. However, after deducting goodwill amortisation and provisions for social security fees related to employee stock options, the company was still in the red.

Guidelines proposed for curbing manipulation aimed at investors

The Hong Kong Society of Accounting (HKSA) has proposed new guidelines in a bid to prevent companies from manipulating accounts and misleading investors.

In two draft proposals sent to HKSA members yesterday, the society aims to get local accounting standards into full compliance with international guidelines, said James Fawls, the HKSA's director of professional standards.

Market woes push Goodwill Investment net down 95pc

Property and financial services company Goodwill Investment (Holdings) saw net profit fall 95.35 per cent to $3.35 million for the six months to June 30, while turnover declined to $65.61 million from $349.89 million. The firm yesterday said its interim results had been 'badly affected by the unprecedented difficult conditions prevailing in the financial and property market'.

Great Wall replenishes reserve

Great Wall Electronic International yesterday proposed reducing its share premium account by an amount equal to $71.38 million. It said the amount would be transferred to a reserve for eliminating accumulated deficits in the goodwill reserve account and exchange fluctuation reserve account as at March 31 this year.

Buoyant market lifts Goodwill

Financial services group Goodwill Investment (Holdings) has reported a 69 per cent jump in interim profit to $72 million, thanks to the buoyant stock market. An interim dividend of two cents a share was declared. Goodwill said its investment in Winbox, a packaging maker, reported stable growth and Winbox would seek to list in Hong Kong instead of Singapore.

Executive appointed

GRAND Orient Holdings has appointed of Teoh Guan Hock as an executive director.

The appointment followed the acquisition of 30 million shares by Oseda Investment from Joinasset, a subsidiary of Goodwill International Holdings.
