Gentle giants of the jungle

Compiled by Susan Ramsay

The oldest gorilla in a zoo, Jenny, died this month. She was 55 years old. She had stomach cancer. This made it hard for her to eat and drink. She did not like bananas, but loved to eat their skins.

Gorilla famed for using tools reveals new level of intimacy with mate

Maybe the old preachers were on to something about the missionary position being a sign of civilisation. Leah (centre), the female western gorilla first spotted using a stick as a measuring rod to test the depth of a lake in 2005, was recently seen mating face to face with George, the dominant male in their group in the Nouabale-Ndoki National Park in the Republic of Congo.

Too much monkey business

Few were surprised to learn from yesterday's SAR that Dale Rennie's Australasian Entertainment Company (AEC), the firm that brought Bill Clinton to Hong Kong, has gone into liquidation. A source tells us that hard-up AEC was not only trying to make ends meet by providing gorilla-grams to wedding parties, but that the gorillas were demanding money up front.

It's all Greek to me, but this is the first episode of a two-part mini-saga that brings Homer's epic poem about the ancient world's most celebrated wanderer to the small screen.

Feeding fine for teenagers

TWO girls and a boy were each fined $200 in the Magistrates Court yesterday for feeding gorillas in the Zoological and Botanical Gardens.

The three teenagers were caught by a guard as they were feeding the gorillas with biscuits and grapes last year. A spokesman for the Urban Services Department said signs prohibiting feeding were put up in the gardens.

Close encounters of the animal kind

WHAT do you do when confronted by a 135kg silverback gorilla? Adopt standard safety procedure, the submissive stance - head lowered, eyes downcast - and keep very, very still. Okay, so what do you do if a rhino charges you? Run, of course.
