Congo rebels fund insurgency by taking tourists on gorilla treks

A Congolese rebel group accused of killings, mass rapes and other atrocities is taking groups of tourists on gorilla treks to the Virunga national park and using the proceeds to fund its insurgency.

Gentle jungle giants

Last Sunday was Dian Fossey's birthday. Fossey spent 18 years learning all she could about gorillas in Rwanda. Her story was made into the movie Gorillas in the Mist.

Fossey was murdered in 1985. But her work still goes on today.


One of the great apes, gorillas are primates. They live in Africa's jungles, and are quiet and shy animals.
