The Chord Red Reference CD player is probably the best I've heard. It doesn't sound like any other in its class, and oozes quality.

Christmas sting nets 82,000 illegal discs

Twenty-eight shop owners and peddlers were arrested for selling pirated discs - on offer alongside authentic discs - in a series of crackdowns over Christmas.

About 82,000 pirated discs, including 52,000 DVDs of films and TV dramas, 9,000 music CDs and 1,000 other CDs were seized during the eight-day operation that ended on Monday.

Pure theatre

MY HOME-THEATRE system is not as impressive as one might expect from a geek of my standing. I do have a digital-surround sound amplifier and a shiny DVD player, both connected to a 27-inch television. But the speakers, although lovely sounding Paradigm Titans, are bookshelf-size and only two in number. No surround sound in my living room.

DEALERS MAIL OUT

Dealers in pirated compact discs are resorting to a mail-order service after a crackdown on their shops, a Customs officer said yesterday.

Cards advertising the services are handed out to pedestrians and placed in letter boxes.

Recording industry sales slump

The recording industry has reported a slump in sales in the first half, further signaling weakness in the Hong Kong consumer market.

Figures from the International Federation of Phonographic Industries in London showed Hong Kong music sales were down 7.3 per cent to $625.34 million between January and June.

Record haul

CUSTOMS officers seized a record four million cigarettes and 859 pirated laser discs in two separate operations. The cigarettes were uncovered during a routine search at Man Kam To, while the laser discs, worth about $260,000, were imported by air from Singapore.

FAKE CDs are normally made in one of three ways.

An industry insider steals the stamp which is used to make the disc; the stamp is copied; or - the most common method - a sophisticated machine ''reads'' a CD and translates its information onto the counterfeiter's own stamp.

$1.8m disc theft

THIEVES stole compact and laser discs worth $1.8 million from a Mongkok warehouse. The 20,000 discs were taken from the Brighter Record Company's 11th floor premises in a Sai Yeung Choi Street building.
