A suicide car bomb followed by an assault by grenade-throwing gunmen on a police headquarters in a disputed ethnically-mixed city in north Iraq killed 30 people yesterday.

Smoking 'bomb' found

Police were investigating where an explosive device discovered in Yau Ma Tei last night came from.

At 5pm, a cleaner found what he thought was a pipe in a laneway off Battery Street, between Nos95 and 105. Smoke started coming out of it and there was a foul smell, so the cleaner alerted police.

Robbers foiled after bomb threat

Five robbers threatened to bomb a trading company with a grenade before binding and gagging five employees in a raid yesterday.

The robbers were attempting to steal hard disks valued at $1 million, but had to flee empty-handed after the victims freed themselves from their bonds and called police.

Five rob Kowloon trading company of electronic goods, threaten staff

Updated at 6.22pm: Five men broke into a trading company in Kowloon on Wednesday afternoon, threatened the staff physically and then stole electronic goods worth about $1 million.

The incident occurred on the third floor of an industry building at Wang Hoi Road, local radio reported.

A senior constable was injured when a smoke grenade he was handling exploded at 12.30pm during training at the Police Tactical Unit headquarters in Fanling. The officer, 40, was treated at Northern Hospital for wrist injuries.

Grenade pair in gems raid

Two robbers carrying a grenade escaped with $600,000 worth of bracelets and diamond rings from a shop in the Grand Tower Hotel, Nathan Road.

Wearing baseball caps, black T-shirts and jeans, the men entered the hotel's ground floor at about 11.40am. One threatened staff with what appeared to be a pistol while the other held the grenade.
