Licence for Abbey unit

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has granted a banking licence to Abbey National Treasury Services - a wholly owned subsidiary of Britain's Abbey National. Abbey National Treasury Services has operated a representative office in Hong Kong since 1996.

HSBC misses out in Mexico as Santander lands Serfin

HSBC Holdings has lost its bid to win control of Mexico's Serfin bank, with its offer trumped by bid worth 14.64 billion Mexican peso (about HK$12.01 billion) from Spanish banking group Banco Santander Central Hispano.

Bank Santander's offer, about 20 per cent higher than HSBC's, means HSBC still has only a limited presence in Mexico, one of Latin America's largest markets.

Santander hires former HSBC executive to head in region

Santander Group has hired HSBC Holdings' Colin Bamford to head its operations in the region. Previously, Mr Bamford was senior executive vice-president at HSBC Americas, based in New York. Santander said Mr Bamford had also held senior positions in Hong Kong, Japan and Southeast Asia. He would report to Emilio Saracho, Banco Santander's executive vice-president in Madrid, it said.

Judge condemns Peregrine bonuses

Directors of a British-based subsidiary of collapsed Peregrine Investments Holdings were strongly criticised by a senior judge yesterday for paying themselves and staff huge bonuses at the expense of the parent company's creditors.

Hostile Abbey in N & P takeover

LONDON: Abbey National is on the brink of clinching a GBP1.3 billion (about HK$16.09 billion) deal to acquire National & Provincial (N & P) building society.

Barring last-minute hitches, the deal is expected to be announced today.

Banesto's licence withdrawn

THE banking licence of Banco Espanol De Credito (Banesto) was revoked at the request of the restructured bank.

Banesto, incorporated in Spain, had operated in Hong Kong as a branch licensed bank since 1992.

Following financial difficulties last year it was acquired by Banco Santander, a major Spanish bank.
