Some islanders seemed flattered at the global attention Guam is receiving ("How often have we trended on Twitter before?" one of them asked) and were amused that North Korea appears to know the precise location of an island most Americans could not place on a map.

The UN yesterday set up a commission of inquiry into human-rights violations in North Korea, saying some "may amount to crimes against humanity". The 47-member Geneva forum unanimously adopted a resolution brought by the European Union and Japan, and backed by the United States, condemning alleged torture, food deprivation and labour camps for political prisoners.

The death toll from a frenzied attack on Japanese tourists in the Pacific nation of Guam rose to three on Thursday when a man mowed down by the killer’s car succumbed to his injuries, officials said.

Hong Kong coach Kim Pan-gon read the riot act to his players after a poor performance saw them eke out a 2-1 win against Guam in the opening match of the East Asian Cup qualifiers at Mong Kok Stadium yesterday.

Three years ago, in the same tournament in Taiwan, Hong Kong thrashed Guam 12-0.

25 years' jail for drug trafficker

A man who helped organise the attempted shipment of almost 5kg of Ice to Guam was yesterday sentenced to 25 years in jail. Mak Wing-cheung, 31, was on Thursday found guilty by a jury in the Court of First Instance of conspiring to traffic 4.7kg of methamphetamine, or Ice, to Guam in August 2002.
