It has been a lengthy wait for the owners of Rising Power but the Hong Kong Football Club Centenary Challenge Cup (1,650m) at Happy Valley looks like the gelding's chance to break through in style.

Up to 10 Happy Valley race meetings will be shifted to Sha Tin's all-weather track next year as a major overhaul of stormwater drains underneath the racecourse takes place, and Jockey Club officials are bracing themselves for what could be a half-a-billion-dollar blow to betting turnover.

Information is key to tackling track bias at Valley

Information is key to determine if the Happy Valley track is biased in day meetings.

Whether the view of Sunday's Happy Valley meeting from the jockeys' room was correct or not is open to some question, but there is no doubt many players believe the track plays differently for a day meeting than the more frequent night fixtures.

Former weather goddess Icy Wong Yuen-man has landed plenty of jobs with the Jockey Club lately. So it is no surprise that the television anchor had sweet things to say about it last week when she was promoting the race day in Sha Tin. She is even considering having her wedding banquet at the club.

A valley of excitement

Happy Valley is one of the oldest inhabited areas of Hong Kong Island. Its Cantonese name is Pao Ma Dei and it is famous for its internationally acclaimed racecourse.

However, the area has also witnessed a rapid rise in residential developments in recent years due to its convenient location and proximity to the rest of Hong Kong Island and beyond.
