30 rowers plucked from choppy waters

More than 30 contestants in a rowing competition had to be rescued when choppy waters whipped up by strong winds capsized their boats around Tai Shui Hang. Marine police rescued 17 of them, while the others were picked up by the race organiser. Five suffered minor injuries but did not need medical treatment.

A woman is in critical condition with head injuries in Queen Elizabeth Hospital after she was hit by a minibus in Hunghom just before 10am. The 59-year-old woman was hit when the minibus tried to overtake a bus and crossed into the opposite lane in Wuhu Street.

A two-metre-long marble slab fell off a wall onto a pedestrian near the entrance of a Nathan Road building in Yau Ma Tei at about 11am. A man, 25, was treated for head injuries at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Woman treated for head injuries after mugging

A 41-year-old woman was hit on the head and back by a robber in Tsuen Wan. Police said the robber had come up behind her in Castle Peak Road and tried to snatch a handbag and necklace. The man fled when a male passer-by, 18, shouted for help. The woman was treated for head injuries at Yan Chai Hospital and discharged.

WOMAN, 26, FIGHTS OFF TEENS ARMED WITH POLES

A 26-year-old woman fought off four teenagers who clubbed her with wooden poles and tried to snatch her bag in Shekkipmei. Police said the attackers dropped their weapons and fled empty-handed after the attempted robbery in Berwick Street at about 7.30am. She was treated for head injuries at Caritas Medical Centre. The teenagers are still at large.

Woman, 82, hit by van

A woman, 82, was in critical condition in hospital after being hit by a van while crossing the road at the corner of Bowring and Parker streets, Yau Ma Tei. The woman suffered head injuries when she was hit as the van made a right turn. The driver, 39, was questioned but not arrested.

Extortionists bash hawker

A hawker needed hospital treatment for head injuries yesterday after being beaten for refusing to pay extortion money for his business in Kwai Chung. Police said the hawker, 28, was approached by about 10 men dressed in black with dyed hair while attending his stall under a flyover in Kwai Foo Road.

More than $500,000 was stolen in a series of robberies at restaurants yesterday.

Three of the raids, which took place within an hour of each other, involved ambushes on staff carrying company money bags to banks.

Diner robbed

An 83-year-old man was attacked and robbed of $12,000 after having breakfast in a Yau Ma Tei restaurant. He was attacked on the staircase of the restaurant in Nathan Road about 9.30am. Police said the robber, wearing a grey shirt, fled downstairs after the attack. The victim was treated for head injuries at Kwong Wah Hospital.

Wife held over knife attack

A 32-year-old woman who suspected her husband, 48, was keeping a mistress was arrested after she allegedly attacked him with a knife in their flat in Fort Street, North Point, police said. The man was treated for head injuries in Eastern Hospital and discharged. The woman was released on $500 bail.
