Heatwave leaves 39 dead in Guangzhou

At least 39 people have died in a heatwave in Guangzhou, Xinhua has reported.

The youngest victim was a 20-year-old, who died of dehydration while working a night shift on Friday.

Of those who died on Thursday and Friday, 27 were elderly people suffering from chronic diseases. The oldest was a 93-year-old who died at home.

THE highest temperature this year, 33.7 degrees Celsius, was recorded yesterday - and the heat wave is expected to continue today.

The Observatory warned people to beware of heatstroke and said that today would continue to be very hot with the temperatures expected to reach 33 degrees.
