Women's haven Helena May hangs out membership sign

The Helena May club - established to provide physical and moral safety to young women in the early 20th century - is touting membership to passers-by on the street for the first time.

A membership at the Helena May Institute for Women, which opened in 1916, was once one of the most sought after in Hong Kong.

Be that as it may

Half-way up Cotton Tree Drive, near Hong Kong's Central business district, is a beautiful old colonial building. The main entrance has a set of white wooden french doors topped with a glass arch, and at the rear is a small garden that comes alive at night with the flicker of fairy lights.

Women's club has excellent library

I read, with regret, that the British Council is phasing out its library lending services, thus leaving a vacuum for those wishing to borrow English books.
