In yet another attempt to lift Hong Kong out of its gloom, it seems the government has realised it's a lot cheaper to get people to jump into the harbour for a swimming race than to dump $100 million on the Harbour Fest.

Children injured as speedboat ploughs into buoy off Tai Tam

FIVE children and a helmsman, 34, were taken to Eastern Hospital after a speedboat rammed into a buoy off Tai Tam. The helmsman and a girl, 14, were in stable condition last night.

The remaining children, aged between five and 12, were treated and discharged. They were rescued by two passing pleasure boats.

In the shadows of great men

WITH reference to the book review by Tim Hamlett (South China Morning Post , November 26), he says: 'Respectable historians no longer see the past in terms of the lives of great men.' Alas, in fact, the reverse is true.

One thinks of the huge literature on Churchill, exemplified by the magisterial work of Martin Gilbert.
