Rap and ruin: The Great Gatsby

Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby.

Jay-Z on the soundtrack of The Great Gatsby, the 3-D film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel of obsessive love and American social divisions? Surely, that's an all-too-obvious attempt to make a period story appeal to younger cinema-goers?

Mellowing with age but still one cool cat

Snoop Lion still has a fair bit of the Dogg in him. But then Snoop Doggy Dogg, as he was first known, was never afraid of embracing his contradictions. Photo: AP

Snoop appears, as if by magic, in a puff of his own smoke. The rapper, actor, gangster and stoner extraordinaire has reinvented himself as a reggae-singing messenger of hope. Snoop Dogg is dead, long live Snoop Lion.

Out of My Closet: DJ Enso

Clothes help DJ Enso ''get into character''. Photo: Carmen Chan

We're standing in DJ Enso's Lan Kwai Fong apartment on a noisy Friday night - his turntables are plainly in sight, but it's not music that's on his mind. He's talking to us about fashion - like his sounds, the DJs dress sense is a tongue-in-cheek blend of genres.

A savage piece of social commentary

A savage piece of social commentary

This is the album that unleashed the most murderous genre in musical history - the first seminal gangsta rap record. And yet, for all its guns, profanity and braggadocio, the perennial contention about gangsta artists - that they are merely documenting an ugly social reality rather than glorifying it - never rang so true as it does here.

Original gangster

Hideaki Ishi, better known as DJ Krush, is one of the very few artists from Asia who has commanded two decades of cred in the global hip hop scene. The 49-year-old Japanese producer and DJ got his first big international break in the mid-1990s from the Mo' Wax label with a series of genre-defining instrumental hip hop albums.

Pharrell Williams

STARTING FROM SCRATCH I was born in Virginia Beach [in the US state of] Virginia in 1973. It was a very normal place, but it was a place where you could develop if you wanted to. If you didn't want that, then you could have a nice, happy normal life. Michael Jackson was my earliest musical influence for sure - I was a little too young for Prince, I guess.

Stepping up and standing out

There's a reason Japanese hip hop dancer Kentaro!! has two exclamation marks in his name. He knows how to move!! He taught about 30 aspiring dancers at Studiodanz in Quarry Bay last Thursday. Junior reporter Arjun Sivakumar was there to learn what hip hop is all about. Check out what he discovered ....

How did it all start?

'Baby' b-boys' big break

To be a hip hop dancer, a.k.a. a b-boy, you need either a cool baseball cap or an outstanding haircut.

Bailrok, 11, has a mohawk, and Baby Boogaloo, 8, an afro. Together they are Future Funk - the talented dance duo who stormed the stage of America's Got Talent with captivating moves last year.

Hitting the right note in 2011

Best Album - I'm With You by original funk rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers. I've literally had it on an infinite loop for months now. Many feel it's barely up to par with their earlier albums. For me, that's what makes the whole thing so scary - the infinite loop part, not the music.

The Less You Know, the Better (CD) DJ Shadow

American music producer DJ Shadow has released his fourth studio album, The Less You Know, the Better. Also known as Josh Davis, he can be credited with bringing turntables to the foreground of pop music, and introducing electric hip hop to the masses. This is a fine album, a condensation of more than two decades' worth of sampling experience.

hot picks

Shannon Wong, 15

cd: Pearl Jam Twenty OST. I wasn't around when the band formed but their sound is timeless.

dvd: Submarine. A funny look into the life of a delusional teen.

movie: Paradise Kiss. I love the manga, and the film version really makes the wardrobe pop out.
