Luxury brands and high rents threaten old Hong Kong's character

I live on Hollywood Road, which has been known as "antique street" for many years, thanks to all the antique and artwork shops scattered around the area. However, I am not sure if the street will keep its unique character in the years to come.

There was once a boy in France who liked going to art galleries. From the age of 11, he started saving his pocket money and after three years, he knew how to spend it: on a lithograph by German-French artist Hans Hartung. The gallery's director, taken aback by this unexpected client, remarked that she wasn't convinced it was an ideal purchase for a 14-year-old.

Reinventing the potter's wheels

Newly opened Galerie NeC on Hollywood Road is presenting sculptures by Dutch artist Wouter Dam this month.

Dam's ceramic creations come in thin circular forms in pastel shades. Although based in Amsterdam, his work has been shown in galleries and museums around the world.

Traditional wisdom

More and more of Hong Kong's frequent visitors are opting to buy a pied-?-terre in the city rather than accept the impersonal aura of a hotel room. Tony and Linda Huang are one such couple. They invested in a 1,500 sq ft loft space in SoHo and set about recreating some of the atmosphere of their classically styled San Francisco home.

Uncommon practice

You have to go out on a limb to offer a novel retail experience in shopping-mad-but-staid Hong Kong and entrepreneur Luigino Bottos has done just that - with Bothos, a fashion-cum-lifestyle concept store that opened last month.

The commissioner for heritage says the government will keep an open mind about the future of the Central School site in Hollywood Road.

Jack Chan Jick-chi was speaking yesterday at the first government forum staged to gauge the public's views about the site where police married quarters were built over the remains of the school.

Three options to be offered for Central School

Three options for revitalising the historic Central School site in Hollywood Road will be put forward for a three-month public consultation.

But district councillors and pressure groups have urged the government to clarify whether the site will be taken off its for-sale list and residential and commercial development will be banned.

tricks of the trade

Since the 19th century, Hong Kong has provided a market for Chinese antiquities and curios. Many visitors to the city take away some oriental curio as a memento of their stay, and the trade remains a mainstay of the local tourist industry.

New office ... and a new addition

The Asia Art Archive officially opened its new office on Saturday with a welcome brunch for guests and friends. The arts resource centre offers a collection of more than 22,000 items - manuscripts, correspondence, clippings, rare periodicals and art objects. However, for executive director Claire Hsu (below) the most significant addition will be at home.

Massage not welcome at prison site

Half of the people who live or work near Central Police Station, Victoria Prison and the former Magistracy would like to see a medical clinic on the site.

But there is strong opposition to suggestions that parts of the site may be used by a massage centre or an off-course betting shop.

Escalating a security risk

I refer to 'Photograph ban rules stupid' ( South China Morning Post, December 2).

I am also a Hong Kong-based freelance photographer. Not too long ago I was commissioned to follow a celebrity chef from the United Kingdom and a television team around Hong Kong as they were filming a series here.
