Freeze on minimum wages ordered to take stress off firms

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security has issued a directive asking local governments to freeze minimum wages to avoid putting additional pressure on companies already feeling the pinch of the global economic crisis, Xinhua reported last night.

Police rescue HK kidnap victim

A Hong Kong businessman was rescued by Shantou police last month after being kidnapped by a mainland gang. According to Xinhua, the man was kidnapped and taken to Shantou in eastern Guangdong province on June 8 by a gang which demanded a $3 million ransom.

Killers on run

THE killers of a Hong Kong businessman in a Shenzhen nightclub last month are still on the loose. The unnamed victim was at the club with friends on March 24 when a dispute over a bill ended with the man being stabbed to death by club workers, his brother Ngan Man-wai told the Nanfang Daily.

SHENZHEN police, aided by Hong Kong Interpol officers, arrested three men in connection with the kidnap of a Hong Kong businessman.

The victim, surnamed Cheung, was robbed of cash and valuables at his Shenzhen shrimp farm before being taken away by six men armed with knives.

Police rescue businessman

SHANTOU police have rescued a Hong Kong businessman following a gunbattle with a kidnap gang, the China News Service reported yesterday.

One kidnapper was shot dead, another wounded and three accomplices arrested, it said.

Kidnap arrests

POLICE in Xiamen have arrested two men in connection with the kidnap of the nine-year-old son of a Hong Kong businessman. A 150,000 yuan (HK$133,800) ransom paid by the boy's father, identified only as Mr Chan, was recovered, according to the China News Service. It did not say whether the boy had been rescued.
