Protests express freedom, not independence sentiment

Is there a rising pro-independence force in Hong Kong? To most locals, the answer is unequivocally no. The sentiments are clearly reflected in the consistently high public satisfaction with Beijing's policies on Hong Kong and the way the "one country, two systems" is implemented here.

Champions of HK autonomy should embrace full colonial history

The Hong Kong City-State Autonomy Movement claims that displays of the Hong Kong British flag are not a call for a return to colonialism but, rather, "the defence of the lion and dragon and the blending of the East and West". Opponents say the flag belongs in a museum. Yet, the use of the flag as an icon of Hong Kong cannot be removed from our history of colonialism.

Beijing's Global Times labels HK autonomy group 'pro-independence'

The state-run Global Times newspaper yesterday accused a group promoting Hong Kong autonomy as being "pro-independence", in another attack against organisations in the city who oppose mainland interference in local affairs.
