Hong Kong airlines dive into budget travel market

Hong Kong Express Airways is to join Jetstar Hong Kong in a foray into the low-cost carrier market. The move by both is expected to help Hong Kong reclaim ground lost to other Asian airports, which already have robust low-cost carrier markets.

Carrier to shed Boeing aircraft

Hong Kong Airlines (HKA) will phase out its five Boeing 737-800 aircraft following an order from the Civil Aviation Department banning any further growth until it meets all the safety requirements for operating a bigger fleet.

The department's unprecedented ban imposed on July 17 will stop Hong Kong Airlines from adding aircraft or diversifying into other plane types.

Grounded and loving it

Andrew Tse, director of Hatton Offices, got into the serviced-office business as an afterthought. For 25 years he worked for several of tycoon Stanley Ho Hung-sun's companies, where he fulfilled his love of aviation by running Heli Express and Hong Kong Express.

Then he bought a floor in an office building in the heart of Central, in Wellington Street.

HK Airlines to halt mainland routes

Hong Kong Airlines will suspend three mainland routes as early as Sunday to stem losses amid weakening travel demand, according to a source.

The carrier would halt flights to Xian, Chengdu and Chongqing when the winter schedule began because bookings for those routes were lukewarm, sources said, adding the Xian route would return next summer.
