Hong Kong soccer clubs wonder when Project Phoenix funds will help them

The government-sponsored Project Phoenix was supposed to revamp Hong Kong soccer from top to bottom. Midway into its three-year cycle, it has achieved half its goal - those at the top are doing well indeed, much to the chagrin of other stakeholders.

Already relegated to the Second Division by finishing bottom of the RedMR First Division, Tai Po lost 2-1 to Tuen Mun in the end-of-season play-offs.

Valley, six-times former Hong Kong champions, thrashed Double Flower 5-0 in the final round of matches yesterday, while four-times champions Eastern, now playing as Eastern Solon, beat Sha Tin 2-0.

Tai Po relegated after Yokohama's stoppage time equaliser

Senior Shield champions Tai Po were leading 2-1 against Yokohama after Aender Mesquita scored in the 90th minute, a result that would have ensured their survival in the top flight. Instead, Japanese striker Kenji Fukuda scored the equaliser in stoppage, relegating Tai Po to the Second Division next season.

The 30-year-old Lee is one of two South China players nominated by the club for the two central defence positions. The other is Chan Wai-ho. A team of 11 players will be selected, with the player winning the most votes crowned Footballer of the Year.
