Busan IPark fend off Hong Kong League XI in Lunar New Year Cup opener

South Korea’s Busan IPark fought off a spirited display from the Hong Kong League XI to win their opening encounter in the Lunar New Year Cup at Hong Kong Stadium.

The local team, made up of the cream of the First Division which had come together only a few days ago, rose to the occasion but couldn’t quite pull off a fairytale victory as they went down 3-1 to the K-League visitors.

Hong Kong Sapling scored their first goal in the top flight, but still fell to their fourth consecutive defeat in their debut season. The team, which comprises mainly Hong Kong under-21 members and a few expatriates, lost 3-1 to Citizen at Kowloon Bay Park last night.

Kitchee try to save New Year event

The loss-making Lunar New Year tournament will be reduced to a single-day event, featuring one overseas team, next month.

For more than two decades, the two-day event held on the first and fourth day of the Lunar New Year, has been a major attraction celebrating the start of a new year, even if its quality has deteriorated since the pull-out of sponsor Carlsberg in 2006.

Kitchee coach Moreno quits

Just days ahead of his club's vital League Cup quarter-final clash with Fourway, Kitchee coach Julio Moreno (pictured) stepped down yesterday, citing family issues in his native Chile. Assistant coach and former Hong Kong international Ricky Cheng Siu-chung will take the helm for Saturday's match. 'Cheng will lead the team until the end of the season,' said a club spokesman.

All change at Kitchee as underachievers inject fresh blood

Kitchee will undergo a major personnel shake-up as they seek to rebound from their trophyless season.

The changes start at the top where they have appointed Chilean coach Julio Morano to take charge for the coming season. They have also targeted a striker from Germany and an Australian goalkeeper to strengthen the squad.

HK face the unknown

The Hong Kong League XI will face Jamaica's Olympic football team in the 2007 Lunar New Year Cup tournament at Hong Kong Stadium later this month.

This year, the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) has invited Olympic teams from Australia, China and Jamaica to compete in the annual showpiece.

Olympic visitors save tournament

Under-23 teams from China, Jamaica and Australia have been confirmed for the Lunar New Year Cup to be held at Hong Kong Stadium next month.

The Hong Kong League XI will complete the line-up for the two-day knockout tournament on February 18 and 21.
