Hong Kong, Chile maritime museums sign co-operative pact

Rear Admiral Humberto Ramirez, secretary general of the Chilean Navy

Hong Kong Maritime Museum has set sail on a voyage to develop partnerships with countries that share a rich sea-going history, starting with Chile. In a symbolic move seen as a transpacific handshake, the museum signed a co-operation agreement on Friday with the National Maritime Museum in the port city of Valparaiso.

Shipping treasures on the doorstep

Few places in Hong Kong sell classy, original, and interesting things any more, but one has popped up right under our nose in Central. It’s the shop attached to the new Hong Kong Maritime Museum. The museum sits on Pier 7 of the Central piers, next to the Star Ferry pier.

Learn from Li Hongzhang

There is a new attraction on the Central waterfront. No, it's not another shopping mall, bar or restaurant. We are referring to the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, which opened at its new location at Central's Pier 8 last month, after six years at Murray House in Stanley.

During my tenure as museum director, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum averaged 35,000 paying visitors a year. This compares favourably with the paid visits to government museums and, indeed, with that of similar maritime museums abroad.

For the first time in well over a century, a part of Chile's naval history with Asia has returned to Hong Kong. The brass bell of the former three-masted Chilean training ship, "General Baquedano", along with a ceremonial sword that belonged to an officer who served on board the vessel during one of its voyages circumnavigating the globe, will be displayed as part of an exhibition at Hong Kong's new Maritime Museum.

Harbour watchdog backs yacht club's proposal for racing facilities

A harbour watchdog has backed a proposal to make room on the harbourfront for an international yacht race village and a permanent site for the Maritime Museum in Causeway Bay.

The Harbourfront Commission hopes the government will factor in such facilities in its work on the Central-Wan Chai Bypass and Island Eastern Corridor Link before it is too late.

Hong Kong's important maritime heritage needs a proper showcase

I wish to comment on the financial problems being experienced by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum ('That sinking feeling', August 12), which you say is 'under pressure to move, the repository of our sea heritage is fighting to survive'.

It is no secret that Hong Kong is obsessed with benchmarking itself with New York and London.

Zeman splashes out to own a HK treasure

One of the most famous vessels of Victoria Harbour is changing hands in a deal that will help keep Hong Kong's maritime history alive while giving one of the city's high rollers a new toy.

HSBC has sold the 21-metre motor launch Wayfoong to Alan Zeman, chairman of the Lan Kwai Fong Association, and is donating the HK$650,000 sale proceeds to the Hong Kong Maritime Museum.

Plain sailing

MURRAY HOUSE IS a something of a museum piece in itself. But the 151- year-old building at Stanley has just taken on even greater historical significance, becoming home to the city's fourth private museum.

We're having a bout of museum mania. In addition to debate over the four potential institutions in West Kowloon, the shipping industry will soon open its Maritime Museum in the restored Murray Barracks at Stanley. The Housing Authority is pressing on with plans for a Museum of Housing in Mark 1 resettlement blocks in Shek Kip Mei. All well and good.
