Professor Peter William Mathieson - currently dean of medicine and dentistry at the University of Bristol - has been recommended by an 11-member selection committee to succeed Professor Tsui Lap-chee.

Hong Kong University student Fong Yee-pui could not believe her eyes when she walked into the Olympic Stadium yesterday morning - 80,000 people already waiting for action on the first day of track and field.

Fong may have been a sideshow to the main events, but she made it through to the first round after finishing second in her 100-metre preliminary.

After the war I became a research chemist and academic, and these subjects have always fascinated me. I'm now 86. For years I lectured at the University of Illinois in Chicago.

At first glance of this picture (right), it looks like these members of Hong Kong University's Class of 2003 were lucky enough to get their picture taken with their beloved vice-chancellor, Tsui Lap-chee, in academic regalia (fourth from right). But upon closer inspection, you may notice that the VC looks a bit thin and two-dimensional. And isn't that Mr Tsui again, three to the left?
