Pharmacist hotline receives more than 50 calls

More than 50 calls have been received by an 'ask-a-pharmacist' hotline since it was launched in April. The Practising Pharmacists Association of Hong Kong said 15 calls were from people complaining about side effects after taking generic drugs. The most serious involved a patient who suffered a quickened heartbeat, dizziness and anorexic tendencies after taking slimming pills.

Hotline attendant, unable to understand English, hangs up 17 times on woman trapped in lift

A woman says she was trapped in a lift for more than half an hour because the emergency-hotline receptionist for the lift-maintenance company could not speak English.

When Sinead Yeo, an English-speaking Singaporean, went to visit a friend in Asiarich Court, Central, on Thursday, the lift suddenly stopped.

Less than half 999 calls genuine

Of the 2,279,672 calls made to the 999 emergency number last year, only 44 per cent, or 995,188, were genuine, with the remainder being nuisance or misdialled calls, the police said yesterday in a statement urging Hongkongers to use the hotline only for emergencies. A spokesman said misuse tied up hotline staff and could delay handling of genuine emergencies.
