Howard Cheng's four-day ban for in essence presenting a positive sample to a cold and flu remedy might still look a little harsh to some but it is a reduction on what has been doled out before.

Early bird Yip takes Valley by storm

Trainer Dennis Yip Chap-shing dominated the early part of the card claiming three of the first four races with Think Big, Caga Spirit and Ottimo.

Yip combined twice with Howard Cheng Yue-tin, who also secured a treble of his own, but thanked his other winning rider Weichong Marwing for his efforts with his opening winner Think Big.

Cheng 'lucky' to escape injury

Jockeys have been killed or paralysed from much simpler looking falls, but Howard Cheng Yue-tin walked away from his heart-stopping tumble off Leader and continued to ride for the remainder of the programme.

Cheng's luck had turned in a big way. In the opening event, he landed 19-1 chance My Memory for Dennis Yip Chor-hong to end a horror run of 109 losers.

Howard Cheng glances across after winning the National Day Cup for the fourth time since 2003 yesterday at Sha Tin. Cheng landed the Group Three event on 32-1 chance Tiber for John Moore, making it four wins in the feature from his last four rides in the race. Tiber completed a treble for Cheng, the leading local rider in Hong Kong for many seasons, on the 10-race public holiday card.

Cheng was suspended until February 29, after stewards found him guilty of failing to 'take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure My Fortune was given a full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible placing'.
