Harbour Delight continued to show improvement following a stable transfer and although he might not look a world-beater, a solid dirt trial on Friday indicated he could be competitive soon.

Cheng banned for 13 meetings

Jockey Howard Cheng Yue-tin was hit with the heaviest penalty of its kind in more than seven years yesterday, receiving a 13-meeting suspension for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures in a race, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

A fitness edge on his main rival told as Wah May Star continued his strong form with a fighting Class Three win, with Me Tsui Yu-sak saying the grey's temperament had improved immeasurably of late. Howard Cheng Yue-tin was pocketed on Wah May Star by Douglas Whyte on favourite Real Specialist, but bullocked his way clear and held a neck margin on the line.

Three-year-old sees daylight to finally nail victory on the line

Promising three-year-old Wah May Star justified a short price by returning to the winner's list in the ninth race, but not before giving his supporters cause to think it was all happening again. The Me Tsui Yu-sak-trained gelding has been well supported at both starts but was well beaten and every indication at the 200m was that tickets on the grey were confetti when he buried in the ruck.

A text book Jeff Lloyd ride helped Champagne Days to an opening-day victory and brought up the jockey's 100th Hong Kong win in the process. Lloyd positioned had the consistent five-year-old box-seating in a slowly-run race, then peeled out at the 800m before scoring by 2 1/2 lengths in a Class Three handicap (1,400m).
