Britain's former prime minister Margaret Thatcher was in hospital yesterday recovering from a minor operation to remove a growth in her bladder and may remain there over Christmas.

Laughs, actually

You might expect to find Hugh Grant taking tea at the Dorchester, watching the cricket at Lords or strolling around Notting Hill, not holed up in a provincial British town. But here he is, still as handsome as ever, situated in a small boardroom on the first floor HQ of Bristol-based Aardman, the animation firm behind those terribly English Oscar-winning characters, Wallace and Gromit.

Pay attention, 007

Lesson one of writing fiction is often said to be: 'Write about what you know best'. 'Unless you've been smacked in the face by a beer bottle you're unlikely to know exactly how it feels and you can't really write realistically about it,' says New Zealand author Andrew Grant.

Music and Lyrics

The soundtrack of Music and Lyrics, starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, offers the same kind of laid-back, feel-good entertainment as the movie does.

Soundtrack as cheesily pleasing as film

The soundtrack for Music and Lyrics, starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, offers the same kind of laid-back, feel-good entertainment as the movie does.

The songs, such as the opening sexy dance number Pop! Goes My Heart by Grant, are cheesy tributes to the pop music of the 80s and 90s, with cliched melodies and corny lyrics.

The hold of old

SANDWICHED BETWEEN the musical marvels of the 1970s and the Britpop rebirth of the 90s, the 80s was the decade that good music forgot. Thankfully, most 80s musical disasters - the likes of Haircut 100, Spandau Ballet and Tears for Fears - have now been consigned to the rubbish bin of musical history.

Actors who can't act

Job description: Someone who can't act because they always play themselves, no matter what the character or the film. Although some were born to play them-selves (cue Jack Nicholson and Hugh Grant), others developed a taste (think Marlon Brando, Michael Caine or Sandra Bullock). Others have grown into the genre as their star has risen (Julia Roberts, Rupert Everett).

Taylor-made clash

It has been known for World and Pearl to schedule the same film on the same evening. One wonders if there was any planning behind the decision to air Liz - The Elizabeth Taylor Story (Pearl, 9.30 pm) on the same night as the second part of Cleopatra (World, 9.30 pm).

I was shocked to read the article headlined, 'Living it up through Divine', which appeared in the 'Focus' section of the Sunday Morning Post, on April 7, about how one woman is directly exploiting the shameful wrongdoing of one famous man to receive publicity and financial benefits. This is all justified by the fact that she is living in the US, the land of opportunity.

Music world hurly burly

ALL fans of live music are busy growing beards for the Folk Festival running from November 10 to 12. It is organised by the Hong Kong Folk Society chaired by a Liz Hurley. Could it be . . .? Hugh Grant's tight-lipped girlfriend did say she wanted to go off somewhere and think for a while.

Sex and the single embryo

THE world is getting careless in its old age. In Hong Kong we are putting electronic tags on newborns in case someone should pick up the wrong one.

This proves that babies, like old car tyres, look much the same. It does little to encourage me to have one. That is something I shall probably leave to my wife.
