The Provincial Higher People’s Court said on Sunday that it would review plaintiff Tang Hui’s lawsuit against Yongzhou authorities after she was sent to a labour camp for 18 months.

A court in Hunan has denied compensation to a former labour camp inmate in a what could have been landmark case in Hunan on Friday. Tang Hui had sought damages from the Yongzhou government department that had put her in the camp for infringing on her personal freedom.

The two men her daughter was able to identify from among her many rapists, Tang says, are being protected by their police colleagues who refuse to launch an investigation.

China is "highly vigilant" about Japanese jet fighter flights over islands claimed by both countries and Japan must bear responsibility for any consequences, military and maritime officials said yesterday. The officials were responding to Japan sending jet fighters several times in the past two weeks to intercept Chinese patrol planes approaching airspace above the Diaoyu Islands. "We will decisively fulfil our tasks and missions while co-ordinating with relevant departments ... so as to safeguard China's maritime law enforcement activities," said Defence Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun.
