The HK$10 billion announced in Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying's policy address to "remove tens of thousands of the dirtiest vehicles from the streets" will be wasted. This measure probably came about thanks to lobbying by vested interests from the motor trade.

Government must pave way for hybrid taxis

In Hong Kong, we have become too accustomed to exhaust fumes emitted from vehicles.

We seem to regard clear blue skies and fresh air as luxuries. I believe things can improve with the use of hybrid taxis.

Hybrid taxis set to hit Hong Kong's roads early next year

Hybrid taxis that run on both petrol and electricity and emit less exhaust fumes could be on the road as early as February.

Crown Motors, sole distributor for main taxi supplier Toyota, said it was talking to the Transport Department about its plan.

It had received orders for 20 cars, which would be ready to for use before the Lunar New Year.
