A suspected chemical spill prompted police to close a section of Choi Yuen Road, Sheung Shui, for more than two hours.

The 200 plastic containers labelled 'hydrogen peroxide' and 'formic acid' were later found to contain liquid soap.

Church members held in chemicals swoop

Five members of the controversial Church of Zion have been arrested after police uncovered a store of potentially lethal hydrogen peroxide hidden in a flat in Fanling early yesterday.

More than 40 detectives swooped on nine residential properties and arrested four men and one woman.

A 17-year-old Park'N Shop worker at the New Tuen Centre in Tuen Mun, surnamed Sin, collapsed after drinking from a water bottle containing hydrogen peroxide. He was in a satisfactory condition in hospital.

Social workers have investigated two reports of children being fed hydrogen peroxide as preached by the cult, the Church of Zion.

In both cases, social workers visited the homes of sect followers. One case was dismissed after the child showed no signs of illness. The outcome of the other home visit was unknown last night.

Cult leader may be charged over use of chemicals

Legal action may be taken against a religious leader who has been encouraging his followers to drink a concentrated chemical solution that medical experts believe is dangerous.

But Church of Zion leader Leung Yat-wah yesterday hit out at critics of his teachings and said he would continue to encourage his followers to swallow hydrogen peroxide.

Fire officers twice raided a New Territories-based doomsday cult yesterday to check on a suspected store of dangerous chemicals, but left empty-handed.

The South China Morning Post revealed on Tuesday that the Church of Zion was keeping highly combustible hydrogen peroxide at its Fanling Wai base.

Cultists stockpiling dangerous levels of hydrogen peroxide, tests show

Church of Zion cultists are stockpiling tanks of illegal hydrogen peroxide with super-pure concentrate levels breaking the Dangerous Goods Ordinance, tests commissioned by the South China Morning Post revealed.

With 40 per cent concentrations of the chemical, traditionally used as a disinfectant, the hydrogen peroxide becomes highly flammable and could explode if ignited.
