Samples of caterpillar fungus from markets of poor quality, tests show

Some of the Chinese caterpillar fungus sold in local markets for use as a medicinal herb does not deserve its high price, a university study finds.

Chinese University tested 15 samples of caterpillar fungus and 10 capsule products collected from shops in Sheung Wan, Kowloon and the New Territories last month.

The incarnation of a cordyceps sounds like something from a horror movie: a parasitic fungus invades a host caterpillar and kills it as it grows, transforming it into a type of mushroom.

What is it? Also known as dong chong xia cao (winter-worm summer-grass) or vegetable caterpillar, cordyceps sinensis resembles a desiccated version of what it once was: a caterpillar.

A caterpillar fungus prized for its medicinal properties is facing extinction because of over-harvesting and damage to its habitat, Xinhua reported yesterday, citing a scientist from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

A RECORD haul of fake Chinese herbal medicine has been seized in raids on a well-known chain of shops, it was revealed yesterday.

Six people, including a director, are on bail after 15,842 packets of counterfeit cordyceps were seized.
